    Design Notes

For my 15th CD (I tell people it's the 13th cause it sounds blusier), I decided to do things a bit differently. I had a lot of songs in the can, but they were in very different styles, so I decided to issue a trilogy of mini-albums. Bluesman is the first of these, to be followed by Activist (folkie songs, angry) and Storyteller (folkie songs, happy). Gone are the days when I ordered CDs a thousand at a time. So few people buy CDs now that I felt 100 was plenty. And I'm done with elaborate covers. I've produced some very fancy CD packages in the past (notably The Bluescoast Sessions, which featured a 12-page booklet with a veritable history of the St Pete blues scene, and Live in Fribourg, which included an audio CD and a video DVD). I'm not going to abandon physical CDs altogether, but from now on the packaging is just going to be basic - a simple pocket with a pic, a song list, and a QR code that buyers can use to go to the web site, where savvy consumers such as yourself can see all the liner notes, credits, additional photos, etc. Why do I offer my songs free here on the web site? Two reasons:

    • Streaming sites deliver only the music, usually in low quality. with absolutely no consideration for how the artist wanted it to be presented. In some cases they bastardize the album covers. On my site you can see my album the way I want you to see it, complete with all the good stuff that you used to get on an album cover. (Sorry, can't roll a joint on it.)
    • The streaming scamsters pay independent artists next to nothing (or in some cases, literally nothing) anyway - a hundredth of a cent per stream is considered pretty good pay these days. So why bother? When automakers decided to stop putting CD players in cars, they eliminated any chance for independent artists to make money from our recordings. So be it. All I care about now is that people listen to the music, so please do.
