Design Notes

As long-time fans know, the St. Pete Mountain Boys were originally formed as a gang of Western outlaws, and played music on the side. They had a price on their heads from early in the game, but it wasn’t because of their criminal activities - train robbery, cattle rustling and gunfighting were so common in the Old West that they were pretty much considered normal behavior, and beneath the notice of the authorities.

No, the reason every lawman in the West wanted to see the Mountain Boys hang was their playing—they were accused of murdering traditional bluegrass music, and boring audiences into a rage with the stupid jokes they told between songs.

One day, out on the high plains, a couple of Texas Rangers caught up with the Mountain Boys, and soon four nooses were hanging from the nearest tree. The Rangers told the Boys they would let them go if they agreed to hang up their instruments then and there, and torture the honest folks’ ears no more.

Realizing that their game was up (and the glory days of the Old West were winding down anyway), the Boys agreed, and meekly returned to the 20th century. But here in 2025, the St. Pete Mountain Boys ride again. They’ve given up the outlaw life in favor of music (this meant taking a substantial pay cut). However, they’re still wanted by the law, so they avoid large venues, and prefer to play small intimate clubs and house concerts.
